USDA Boosts Payments for Disaster Relief

USDA Boosts Payments for Disaster Relief

By Jamie Martin

Farmers affected by natural disasters in 2023 and 2024 will receive additional financial relief through updates to the Supplemental Disaster Relief Program administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

USDA has approved a second round of payments for farmers who already have confirmed applications. The payment rate has been raised from 35% to 70%, allowing eligible producers to receive a larger share of their calculated assistance.

“President Trump is the most pro-farmer President of our lifetime, and through his leadership, the Administration is supporting farmers through unprecedented international market access, lowered taxes, and improvements to the farm safety net with the Working Families Tax Cuts,” said Secretary Brooke Rollins.

“By extending the program deadline and making available this additional payment, we are continuing to put farmers first during this difficult farm economy,” said Rollins.

“To help secure the economic viability of disaster-impacted farmers, we’re taking deliberate steps to provide stronger, more meaningful financial support for our nation’s agricultural producers,” said Rollins.

To ensure better participation, the deadline for both stages of the program has been moved to August 12, 2026. The extension gives farmers additional time to address paperwork changes and helps local offices manage applications efficiently.

Stage 1 supports insured crop losses previously covered through federal programs, while Stage 2 focuses on losses that were not originally compensated, including quality issues and partial damages.

Only losses caused by qualifying natural disasters are eligible. These include floods, droughts, hurricanes, tornadoes, extreme heat, winter storms, wildfires, and related conditions. Drought eligibility is determined using national drought monitoring standards.

USDA has distributed substantial funding across multiple relief programs to strengthen farm resilience and ensure continued agricultural production. These efforts are designed to help farmers overcome financial stress, safeguard livelihoods, and maintain stability across rural communities.
