The University of Wisconsin-River Falls is set to host its annual Farm and Industry Short Course (FISC), a 16-week residential program offering hands-on training for students aiming to enter the dairy industry. The program runs from October 27, 2025, through March 13, 2026, with a scheduled holiday break.
FISC students will have access to UWRF’s extensive facilities, including two lab farms, a dairy pilot plant, and a meat processing plant, providing practical learning experiences.
Participants earn college credits that can be applied toward a bachelor’s degree at UWRF or transferred to other institutions.
The curriculum focuses on animal management, covering areas such as health and welfare, nutrition, reproductive physiology, and milk quality. In addition, students gain an introduction to basic business management and accounting, equipping them with essential skills for the agricultural industry.
“The Farm and Industry Short Course is a good choice for students who want to gain practical, hands-on experience in dairy and agricultural industries without committing to a full four-year degree,” said Steve Kelm, professor of dairy science and director of the FISC program.
“We’ve designed the curriculum to be immersive and immediately applicable, giving students the tools they need to succeed in today’s evolving ag landscape.”
Students reside in UWRF residence halls and enjoy the same privileges as traditional four-year students. They can participate in clubs, campus recreation, and athletics, with free access to athletic facilities and discounted admission to events such as theater performances.
