2026 Wisconsin Ag Outlook Forum to Focus on Trade Impacts

2026 Wisconsin Ag Outlook Forum to Focus on Trade Impacts

By Blake Jackson

The 2026 Wisconsin Agricultural Outlook Forum is set for Tuesday, January 27, on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. This year’s theme, “Agriculture and Trade: The Wisconsin Experience,” reflects the growing importance of global markets in shaping the state’s farm economy. The forum will be held in person from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in Varsity Hall at Union South, followed by a reception.

Hosted by UW-Madison’s Renk Agribusiness Institute, the event will examine how shifting international trade policies, economic pressures, and market trends are influencing agricultural production and business decisions in Wisconsin.

Trade has become a defining issue for U.S. agriculture in recent years. Tariffs, trade disputes, and widening trade deficits have led to increased uncertainty across the sector. After decades of consistent trade surpluses, the United States is now experiencing notable trade deficits, driven by rising production costs, weaker commodity prices, and growing financial pressure on farm operations. These conditions have renewed calls for federal support, raising questions about whether another temporary aid program may be needed.

Wisconsin is deeply tied to export markets, selling dairy products, livestock, processed vegetables, corn, soybeans, genetics, and specialty crops including cranberries, dry beans, and ginseng to global buyers. While national indicators suggest mounting challenges, early observations indicate that Wisconsin agriculture may be performing more strongly than other regions.

The forum will examine whether this trend is accurate and what factors may be contributing to different outcomes across industries.

The morning agenda will feature economic and market outlook presentations for dairy, grains, livestock, and farm income from UW-Madison experts and industry partners.

Afternoon sessions will include two panel discussions: one with producers and advisors providing real-world insights, and another with Wisconsin agribusiness leaders offering broader perspectives on international markets, policy risks, and export opportunities.

Registration is available through January 20 at go.wisc.edu/AgOutlookForum2026. Early registration is $75 and includes lunch, refreshments, and reception.

A parking permit may be added for $20 if purchased by December 23. A free livestream will also be available on the Renk Agribusiness Institute YouTube channel for those who cannot attend in person.
