$35M Boost for independent meat processors

$35M Boost for independent meat processors

By Jamie Martin

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has issued the final round of grants through the Meat and Poultry Processing Expansion Program (MPPEP), distributing over $35 million to 15 independent meat processors across 12 states.

This initiative, part of President’s American Rescue Plan, seeks to enhance the processing capacity and competition within the meat industry, fostering broader market opportunities for American farmers and creating jobs in rural areas.

Secretary Tom Vilsack emphasized that these investments are critical components of the Administration's sustainable agricultural strategy, which focuses on empowering farmers and small business owners in rural communities.

The program not only aims to ensure fair market competition but also intends to reduce grocery costs and expand local food options for American families.

Since its inception, the MPPEP has awarded 74 grants totaling more than $325 million, significantly bolstering the U.S. food supply chain.

The impact of these funds has been profound, increasing annual processing capacity significantly and creating substantial employment opportunities within the sector.

Among the notable recipients of the final grants is America’s Heartland Packing in Missouri, which received $10 million to construct a LEED-certified beef processing plant.

Another grantee, Mark’s Custom Meats in Pennsylvania, was awarded $750,000 to expand its facility, doubling its service capacity and adding new jobs. Damian's Craft Meats in Michigan also benefited, receiving $4 million to establish a new facility that will support local livestock producers with competitive pricing and transparent operations.

These final grants underline the USDA’s commitment to enhancing the resilience and competitiveness of America’s meat and poultry supply chain.
