The Wisconsin Historical Society announced the listing of the A.O. Smith Corporation Headquarters on the National Register of Historic Places. The Milwaukee-area facility is comprised of four remaining buildings of the original headquarters and factory complex, which operated in that location from 1910 to 1997.
For many years, the buildings housed A.O. Smith's executive offices, global headquarters and their highly prized Research and Engineering Departments, as well as the world's first automated assembly plant.
In addition to its famous agricultural feed and manure storage systems, the company also manufactured automobile frames, accessories for oil, natural gas and water heating equipment, and helped build machinery for both World Wars I & II.
To qualify for a historic designation, properties much have had a significant impact on American history and provide an outstanding illustration of a broad theme or trend in the nation's culture.
