Boosting corn yields with innovative cover crops

Scientists from the Danforth Plant Science Center and the University of Illinois have initiated a significant research project aimed at understanding the potential benefits of cover crops on soil health and corn production.

Funded by a $650,000 grant from the National Institutes for Food and Agriculture, this multi-year study seeks to provide farmers with actionable data to optimize cover crop use for improved yields and environmental sustainability.

The research team, including Christopher Topp, Marcus Griffiths, and Kong Wong from Danforth, along with Kaiyu Guan, Bin Peng, and Sheng Wang from the University of Illinois, will conduct field trials using 12 different species of cover crops. These trials will integrate advanced technologies such as root phenomics, high-tech sensing, and machine learning-based models to analyze the impact of cover crop root systems on soil quality and corn crop performance.

Christopher Topp highlighted the project's goal to bridge significant knowledge gaps that currently limit the effectiveness and adoption of cover crops by farmers.

“Roots are the interface of the plant with soil, but our understanding of cover crop root system traits and their effects on soil health and productivity is still limited,” said Topp.

Despite the recognized benefits of cover cropping for ecosystem services, adoption rates remain low in U.S. agriculture. This study aims to change that by shedding light on how different cover crops affect soil and crop outcomes, particularly in diverse agricultural settings.

Kaiyu Guan emphasized the collaborative effort's innovative approach, combining the Danforth Center’s root phenotyping capabilities with advanced modeling from the University of Illinois.

This synergy is expected to enhance understanding and promote better cover crop practices across the Midwest, ultimately encouraging wider adoption among farmers.
