The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) encourages the public to discover and enjoy the state's vast public lands this hunting season.
Wisconsin boasts millions of acres of public land, most of which are open to hunting, providing endless opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts and creating lasting memories.
To assist hunters in finding suitable public hunting areas, the DNR offers user-friendly online public lands mapping tools. These tools provide detailed information on state-owned properties, voluntary public access lands, and more.
The Public Access Lands Tool displays DNR properties and nearly all federal and county-owned lands, while the Fields and Forest Lands Interactive Game Bird Hunting Tool helps hunters locate ideal habitats for various game birds.
The Voluntary Public Access and Habitat Incentive Program Interactive Map highlights properties that landowners have opened to public hunting access in exchange for financial incentives. Hunters should carefully review the guidelines for accessing these properties.
After conducting initial online research, the DNR recommends scouting potential hunting areas to assess habitat and wildlife signs. Having multiple options will allow hunters to adapt to changing weather conditions or increased hunter pressure in specific areas.
It's important to remember that public lands are shared spaces, and other hunters and recreational users may be present. To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, follow these essential tips:
- Know the property boundaries and only hunt in designated areas.
- Practice leave no trace principles by avoiding altering or cutting tree limbs.
- Be adaptable and have a backup plan in case of changing conditions.
- Be aware and respectful of other hunters, recreators, and DNR staff.
Follow the TAB-K rules of firearm safety:
- Treat every firearm as if it is loaded.
- Always point the muzzle in a safe direction.
- Be certain of your target and what lies beyond.
- Keep your finger outside the trigger guard until you are ready to shoot.
By following these guidelines, hunters can ensure a safe, enjoyable, and successful hunting experience on Wisconsin's public lands.
