Wisconsin 2024 bear hunting season begin

By Blake Jackson

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is reminding hunters that the 2024 bear hunting season begins on September 4th. With careful planning and preparation, hunters can expect another successful season this fall.

“Bear hunting provides a unique and exciting outdoor experience with family and friends,” said Randy Johnson, DNR large carnivore specialist. "We see the popularity of bear hunting in Wisconsin increasing with the growing number of customers who apply for a bear hunting license or preference point each year. With growing demand and limited licenses, we encourage the public to review management zone boundaries.”

The 2024 bear season runs from September 4th to October 8th, with specific regulations depending on the hunter's management zone. Hunters must be aware of their zone and the corresponding regulations.

In Zones A, B, and D, where dogs are allowed:

  • Hunting is permitted from September 4th to 10th using bait and other legal methods.
  • Hunting is permitted from September 11th to October 1st using bait, dogs, or other legal methods.
  • Hunting is restricted to using dogs only from October 2nd to 8th.

In Zones C, E, and F, where dogs are not allowed:

  • Hunting is permitted from September 4th to October 8th using bait and other legal methods.

Wisconsin's bear population is thriving, with an estimated 26,000 animals. These bears inhabit forested areas in northern and central Wisconsin, with a gradual southward expansion.

Hunting plays a vital role in black bear research and management. The samples collected from harvested bears provide valuable data for monitoring and ensuring the health of Wisconsin's bear population.
