CAFO Proposal Prompts Regulatory Efforts in Wisconsin


A large swine farm that was being considered in Wisconsin was stopped by 5 Wisconsin towns. In response to a proposed pig Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation (CAFO) in northwest Wisconsin, five small towns enacted ordinances to address environmental and health concerns related to large farms. While one town rescinded its regulations, others are actively engaged in finding solutions.

The involvement of Wisconsin's major business and agricultural interest groups has generated intense dialogue and debate. The Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation and Wisconsin Dairy Alliance have requested public records to better understand the advisory group's insights that shaped the CAFO rules,.

Residents formed an advisory group to voice concerns about health and quality of life

Discussions have centered around animal welfare, environmental sustainability, and the economic impact on smaller farms.
