WISCONSIN WEATHER

Continued Warm Stretch Helps Farmers Wrap Up Harvest

Temperatures were above normal across the entire state last week, with many areas getting some much needed rain. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture's weekly crop summary noted that most of the state had less than a half-inch of precipitation, though locations near the Illinois border or near Lake Michigan received more than an inch.

Topsoil moisture conditions were rated two percent very short, eight percent short, 84 percent adequate and six percent surplus.

Nearly a third of the corn for grain was harvested as of Sunday, which is four days ahead of last year and nine days better than the five-year average. The moisture content of field corn harvested for grain was 20 percent. And all but three percent of the corn silage has been chopped statewide.

The soybean harvest reached 59 percent complete. That's three days behind the 2020 progress, but nearly a week ahead of normal.

Farmers have 86 percent of their winter wheat planted with 66 percent of the crop already emerged.

And the fall tillage work is 35 percent complete across Wisconsin farm fields--two days ahead of last year and 12 days further along than usual for mid-October.
