Dairy companies collaborate with students for growth

By Blake Jackson

The Wisconsin dairy industry, a powerhouse generating over $45 billion annually, is continuously seeking innovative solutions to improve its processes, products, and marketing strategies.

To foster innovation and bridge the gap between academia and industry, the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Renk Agribusiness Institute has partnered with the Dairy Business Innovation Alliance to connect students with real-world challenges.

Through the AAE Senior Capstone Experience course, students work directly with dairy companies to develop practical solutions. This unique opportunity allows students to apply their knowledge and skills to real-world problems while gaining valuable industry experience.

In the spring of 2024, students from the University of Wisconsin-Madison partnered with Marieke Gouda and Meister Cheese to address specific challenges faced by these companies.

Marieke Gouda sought a cost-effective manufacturing and stocking plan to optimize production and minimize losses, while Meister Cheese aimed to develop a robust marketing strategy for their new retail products.

“This partnership provided an irreplaceable opportunity to gain real-world experience through a hands-on project,” says Morgan Knilans, a senior double majoring in AAE and life sciences communication. “I was able to work with other UW students, benefit from the knowledge and mentorship of instructors, and directly engage with business partners.”

The collaboration between students and industry leaders yielded significant benefits for both parties. Marieke Gouda and Meister Cheese gained valuable insights and actionable strategies to improve their business operations and market presence.

“We worked with incredible students. Their hard work, dedication and innovative ideas truly impressed everyone in attendance at their presentations,” says Marieke Penterman, founder and owner of Marieke Gouda. “It was inspiring to see their passion and creativity. I hope they saw just how exciting and wonderful the dairy industry is.”

The success of this initiative has led to continued collaborations between the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the dairy industry. By fostering these partnerships, the university is helping to ensure the future of Wisconsin's dairy industry and inspiring the next generation of agricultural leaders.
