Dairy Symposium Highlights Research and Innovation

By Blake Jackson

The Dairy Innovation Hub’s annual Dairy Symposium is scheduled for Wednesday, May 14, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Memorial Union. This in-person event welcomes academic audiences, students, and the public to explore the latest in dairy research.

Backed by a $7.8 million annual investment from the state of Wisconsin, the Hub spans UW–Madison, UW–Platteville, and UW–River Falls. Its goal is to strengthen the $52.8 billion dairy industry through scientific advancements focused on environmental, economic, and social sustainability.

The day-long event begins with a registration and breakfast session at 8:00 a.m., followed by a plenary talk at 8:45 a.m. by Mike Brown, Vice President for Dairy Market Intelligence at T.C. Jacoby & Company. His presentation is titled, “Understanding the impact of research on the dairy supply chain.”

The agenda also includes breakout sessions, student “flash talks,” and poster presentations from Hub-funded researchers. At 3:00 p.m., the afternoon panel discussion will focus on “Dairy Soil & Water Regeneration.”

Panelists include Gregg Sanford (UW-Madison), Dennis Busch (UW-Platteville), Reza Afshar (Dairy Management Inc.), Cristine Morgan (Soil Health Institute), and Joshua Faulkner (University of Vermont).

This symposium highlights over 250 funded projects, showcasing research that keeps Wisconsin’s dairy sector competitive on a global scale.

“Understanding the impact of research on the dairy supply chain,” said Mike Brown, “helps ensure decisions are data-driven and meaningful for the entire industry.”

Pre-registration is required, and recordings of the event will be made available later on the Dairy Innovation Hub’s YouTube channel.
