The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) is embarking on a groundbreaking initiative to combat the spread of the spongy moth (Lymantria dispar) across the state.
Spanning 47 counties, the program aims to set up more than 10,000 strategically placed traps from mid-May to early July. Property owners are urged to cooperate with DATCP trapping staff and refrain from disturbing the traps.
Functioning as essential monitoring tools, the traps play a crucial role in identifying areas where the spongy moth is encroaching into previously unaffected regions. By pinpointing these pockets of infestation, program managers can swiftly and effectively curtail the population's expansion, preventing extensive tree damage.
The traps themselves consist of small green boxes securely fastened to tree branches. Containing the scent of female spongy moths, the traps remain undetectable to humans and other insects. Their purpose is to lure and capture adult male spongy moths, aiding in population monitoring and control efforts.
Trappers, easily identifiable by their fluorescent vests and identification cards, will diligently monitor the traps until August, when male moth activity diminishes and the traps are removed. To ensure a streamlined process and address any concerns, each trap is labeled with a contact phone number that property owners can utilize for inquiries or request trap removal.
By proactively engaging in this innovative trapping program, DATCP aims to safeguard Wisconsin's forests from the detrimental impact of spongy moth infestations. Through a combination of vigilant monitoring, prompt action, and community cooperation, the state is taking proactive measures to protect its valuable trees and preserve the natural beauty of its landscapes.
