The 2022 Census of Agriculture paints a vibrant picture of Wisconsin's agricultural sector, highlighting its diversity and economic strength. Released by the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), the census reveals key insights into the state's farming landscape.
"Wisconsin's agricultural diversity is our true power," states DATCP Secretary Randy Romanski. From milk and grains to specialty crops and livestock, Wisconsin farms offer many products, ranking 10th in the nation with a total value of production exceeding $16.7 billion.
Family farms remain at the heart of this success story, with over 95% of Wisconsin's 58,000 farms falling under this category. They manage 13.8 million acres of land, demonstrating agriculture's deep roots in the state.
Agriculture's impact extends beyond farm gates. It fuels the economy, providing Wisconsin consumers with food, fuel, and fiber. Recognizing its growing importance, Governor Evers declared 2024 as the "Year of the Worker," with initiatives focused on engaging youth and creating new career pathways in agriculture. The census reflects this focus, with nearly 10% of producers identified as under 35 years old.
"Wisconsin's high census response rate, second best in the nation, demonstrates the commitment of our producers," acknowledges Romanski. He extends gratitude to both farmers and NASS for their contributions to this valuable data collection effort.
With its diverse production, strong family farms, and commitment to innovation, Wisconsin agriculture appears well-positioned for continued success and a bright future.
