Governor Tony Evers says there will be another round of the Wisconsin Farm Support Program to help struggling producers in the form of direct payments again this year. During stops at area farms near Columbus, Coon Valley and Menomonie on Wednesday, the governor said he will distribute $50 million to eligible producers later this fall.
"There's no question Wisconsin farmers are some of the strongest, most resilient folks in the state, but the last year brought on unique and unprecedented challenges--challenges many of them are still grappling with," Gov. Evers said. "They've always had our back, and now, we need to have theirs. I'm glad to be providing another round of direct aid to farmers to support their recovery and strengthen one of our state's most important industries."
Evers first mentioned the possibility of another grant program during a conference call with farm reporters in June, but could not provide specific details at the time other than that it would be funded through Wisconsin's share of the American Rescue Plan dollars.
The new program would be similar to last year, in which more than $50 million was sent to 18,000 applicants.
Evers' office announced that the application period will open after the fall harvest to ensure sufficient time for farmers to learn about the program and apply.
