In response to concerns raised by Congress, the U.S. government is taking action to support farmers in the Southeastern United States who grow seasonal and perishable crops.
A new committee has been established by the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to specifically address the challenges faced by these producers.
The committee will be comprised of experts who can offer valuable insights into the unique needs of Southeast farmers growing fruits, vegetables, and other time-sensitive agricultural products. Their recommendations will focus on ways to improve the competitiveness of these producers in the marketplace.
This initiative reflects the Administration's commitment to supporting specialty crop growers. It complements existing programs like the USDA's Specialty Crops Competitiveness Initiative, which provides resources to enhance U.S. specialty crop competitiveness in foreign markets and strengthen domestic marketing efforts.
By collaborating with the committee and Congress, USTR and USDA aim to develop effective solutions, including both administrative actions and potential legislation, to bring real benefits to Southeast producers of seasonal and perishable crops.
