H5N1 in cattle - Troxler leads critical forum

By Jamie Martin

On August 27, Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler will convene a significant discussion at the N.C. State Fairgrounds to address the emergence of H5N1 in dairy cattle.

This important forum, titled "Conversations with the Commissioner - Emerging Issues in Agriculture," will feature a collaboration between Troxler and prominent leaders from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The forum, set to take place in the Kerr Scott Building from 10 a.m. to noon, will include insights from U.S. FDA Commissioner Dr. Robert Califf, USDA Deputy Undersecretary Dr. Eric Deeble, and other key figures such as Dr. Ben Shelton from the dairy industry and State Veterinarian Dr. Mike Martin.

Together, they will discuss federal and state responses to the H5N1 outbreak and strategies to enhance the dairy industry's readiness for animal disease outbreaks.

The event will also feature a roundtable discussion, moderated by Joe Reardon, the senior director of Food Safety Programs for NASDA, focusing on preparation and response mechanisms for future animal health emergencies.

Attendance is free, but registration is required. Interested individuals can RSVP through the NCDA&CS webpage to participate in this crucial discussion aimed at safeguarding the U.S. dairy industry from emerging threats.
