The University of Wisconsin–Madison Division of Extension Crops and Soils Program has introduced two new resources to support field crop scouts - the Field Scouting Report Template and the Scouting Tools Checklist.
These tools are designed to improve how scouts assess and document crop conditions. The Field Scouting Report Template provides a structured format for recording grower and scout details, crop types, and field observations. It includes dedicated sections for tracking weed pressure, insect damage, and signs of disease, helping ensure consistent and reliable field reports.
The Scouting Tools Checklist is a practical companion to the template. It lists all the essential items scouts need for effective fieldwork.
This includes tools such as soil probes, sweep nets, and insect vials, along with personal care items like sunscreen, bug repellant, and water. The goal is to ensure every scout is well-equipped and ready for all types of field conditions.
“These tools promote efficient scouting and help ensure important information isn’t missed during field visits,” a UW–Madison Extension official noted.
Together, these resources offer a systematic approach to field crop scouting. They help improve the accuracy of assessments, reduce the chances of overlooking critical data, and support timely and informed crop management decisions.
With a growing focus on precision agriculture, resources like these play a vital role in supporting sustainable farming practices.
By improving field reporting and preparedness, UW–Madison’s tools are helping to enhance farm productivity and planning across the country.
