Parasite Patrol Workshop for Sheep and Goat Producers

Parasite Patrol Workshop for Sheep and Goat Producers

By Blake Jackson

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Extension is hosting an important workshop for sheep and goat producers titled "Parasite Patrol."

The event will take place on June 20 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Fond du Lac County Extension Office, located at 400 University Drive, Room 206, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, 54935.

Intestinal parasites can be a significant challenge for sheep and goat farmers, affecting the health and productivity of their herds. These parasites can lead to decreased production and weakened immune systems, which ultimately impacts flock performance.

The workshop aims to help producers tackle this issue by providing them with the tools and knowledge needed to manage intestinal parasites more effectively.

During the workshop, participants will gain insight into several key topics, including the life cycle of intestinal parasites, the development of parasite resistance, and effective management strategies.

The event will also offer hands-on experience, with attendees conducting fecal egg counts (FEC) using samples from their own animals.

By attending the workshop, sheep and goat producers will leave with a better understanding of intestinal parasite loads, their effects, and how to manage and treat them effectively. Attendees will also receive a McMaster microscope slide and instructions for performing at-home fecal egg counts.

Pre-registration is required, and the event is open to sheep and goat producers of all flock sizes.

For registration or more information, contact Adam Hartfiel, Regional Livestock Educator at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Extension. You can reach him via email at adam.hartfiel@wisc.edu or by phone at (920) 647-6560.
