Wisconsin's senior member of the House of Representatives has chosen not to run for re-election in 2022. La Crosse Democrat Ron Kind announced Tuesday that he'll step down from his third congressional seat after 13 two-year terms in office at the end of next year.
Kind, who is now 58, has long authored and supported legislation that benefits agriculture--especially in the area of conservation. Most recently, he joined fellow Wisconsin Rep. Mike Gallagher in introducing a bill that would establish a Dairy Pricing and Policy Commission to recommend solutions to the issues facing family dairy producers; and sponsored the Codifying Useful Regulatory Definitions, or CURD Act, which would create a formal definition of 'natural cheese to ensure consumers are fully informed when purchasing cheese.
During his career he was recognized by state and national farm organizations for his voting record on issues that affect producers and other industries that represent rural America.
He is a longtime member of the Ways and Means Committee, which has jurisdiction over tax policy, Medicare, Social Security, and international trade. And he serves on the Subcommittee on Health, and since becoming a member in 2007.
Kind's departure will result in a primary election of both Republicans and Democrats during the upcoming election cycle.
