Farmers continued to push ahead with their fall harvest and tillage work last week, despite periodic rain and snow in portions of the Badger State. According to the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, producers kept busy combining corn and soybeans and applying manure where field conditions allowed.
The latest crop/weather report puts topsoil moisture condition levels at four percent very short, 20 percent short, 72 percent adequate and four percent surplus.
As of Sunday, 14 percent of the corn for grain was harvested--12 days behind last year and four days slower than the five-year average. Moisture content averaged around 25 percent. For those chopping their corn for silage, about 89 percent of that crop is now off the fields.
The soybean harvest was 56 percent complete, just a day behind the 2021 progress, but five days ahead of the average.
Eighty-three percent of the winter wheat has been planted and 56 percent of the crop has emerged.
Fall tillage was 34 percent complete, even with last year, but 10 days ahead of normal for mid-October.
