Tom Vilsack open to another term as Ag secretary

By Jamie Martin

Tom Vilsack, the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, has hinted at the possibility of extending his tenure if the Democratic Party secures the presidency in the upcoming November elections.

Vilsack, who previously served under President Barack Obama, is currently part of President’s cabinet and is completing his term. The potential extension could align his service with James "Tama Jim" Wilson, the longest-serving agriculture secretary.

Speaking at the Farm Progress Show near Boone, Vilsack shared insights from his extensive career, particularly his time as a lawyer during the 1980s Farm Crisis. This period significantly shaped his future, compelling him to dedicate his life to enhancing rural and agricultural communities.

The discussions at the Farm Progress Show also touched on crucial topics like trade policies, the urgency of passing a new farm bill, and tackling animal diseases such as bird flu.

Vilsack emphasized the importance of continuity in leadership to address these enduring agricultural challenges. His commitment to agriculture and rural communities underscores the critical nature of the role he plays, particularly at a time when these sectors face numerous challenges.
