USDA Approves D-SNAP for California Wildfire Victims

USDA Approves D-SNAP for California Wildfire Victims

By Jamie Martin

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced the approval of Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP) benefits for California residents impacted by recent wildfires and strong winds. About 81,477 households in Los Angeles County qualify for this emergency food aid.

D-SNAP assists families recovering from disasters, including those who do not qualify for regular SNAP benefits. Applicants must meet disaster-related income limits and expenses.

“USDA is dedicated to helping Californians as they grapple with the aftermath of the Eaton, Hurst, and Palisades fires by ensuring families have the resources they need to rebuild and recover,” said Acting U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Gary Washington.

Applications for D-SNAP will be open from Feb. 10 to Feb. 18, 2025, through virtual and in-person services. Approved applicants will receive food benefits equal to the maximum monthly SNAP amount for their household size, which can be used at authorized retailers, including some online platforms.

To further assist affected families, USDA has allowed SNAP recipients in seven counties to purchase hot meals and eased reporting rules for food losses due to power outages.

Current SNAP households are ineligible for D-SNAP, but USDA has approved automatic supplemental benefits for those in nine affected zip codes. Other SNAP beneficiaries in impacted areas may request additional assistance.

USDA is working closely with California officials to provide immediate relief through various food and agricultural support programs. For details, residents can contact California’s Department of Social Services or dial 2-1-1.
