USDA funds conservation projects for Wisconsin farmers

USDA funds conservation projects for Wisconsin farmers

By Blake Jackson

The USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is offering financial assistance to Wisconsin farmers, producers, and forest landowners for conservation projects. This is the second round of funding for fiscal year 2024, with an application deadline of May 17th, 2024.

The NRCS offers two primary programs: the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) and the Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP). These programs provide cost-sharing for various conservation practices aimed at improving soil health, water and air quality, and other natural resources.

NRCS encourages early applications to allow for sufficient planning and project prioritization. Applications received after May 17th will be considered in the next funding cycle. Farmers interested in projects requiring permits, like manure storage, should begin the permitting process as soon as possible. Projects with completed designs and submitted permits will receive higher rankings.

The NRCS offers increased financial assistance and dedicated funding to promote inclusivity. Special opportunities are available for socially disadvantaged groups and Wisconsin's federally recognized American Indian nations and tribal communities.

Additional initiatives include the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, offering assistance for improving water quality in specific watersheds. The RCPP also offers partnerships with various organizations for conservation projects throughout Wisconsin.

This announcement highlights the NRCS's commitment to supporting sustainable agriculture and conservation practices in Wisconsin. By providing financial and technical assistance, the NRCS aims to help farmers and landowners achieve their conservation goals.

Farmers and landowners interested in applying for EQIP or RCPP funding should contact NRCS through the USDA Service Center in their county. For more information, visit our website.
