USDA invests $27M in Wisconsin for clean energy projects

By Blake Jackson

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is investing over $27 million in Wisconsin through the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP). This funding will support 15 rural businesses in adopting or expanding clean energy solutions.

"The Rural Energy for America Program awards announced today will directly invest in Wisconsin farmers and small business owners, helping them lower their energy costs," said Neera Tanden, White House Domestic Policy Advisor. "President Biden is laser-focused on creating jobs, lowering costs, and ensuring that Americans in rural communities have access to economic opportunities right here at home."

The REAP grants and loans will fund a variety of clean energy projects, including:

  • Solar power: Businesses like Osceola Auto Body in Polk County will install solar arrays to significantly reduce energy costs and reliance on the grid.
  • Anaerobic digesters: Dairy farms like Abel Project LLC in Fond du Lac County will use REAP funding to build digesters that convert manure into usable biogas, creating renewable energy and additional income.
  • Energy-efficient equipment: Farms like Harold Christensen Jr.'s operation in Clark and Marathon counties will receive funding for modern grain dryers that significantly reduce energy consumption.

These projects not only benefit the environment but also hold economic advantages. Businesses can expect lower energy bills, while some projects, like the digester at Abel Project, are expected to create new jobs.

This announcement builds upon past successes. Since 2021, USDA Rural Development has invested over $20.7 million in Wisconsin through REAP, supporting nearly 200 renewable energy and energy-efficiency projects across the state.

The application window for REAP grants and loans remains open until September 30, 2024. Businesses interested in exploring clean energy options and potentially receiving financial assistance are encouraged to apply.
