WI urges caution as dry conditions elevate fire danger

WI urges caution as dry conditions elevate fire danger

By Blake Jackson

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is urging caution as the state experiences elevated fire danger. With little rain expected and dry conditions persisting, the risk of wildfires is significant.

A lack of rain, low humidity, and strong winds are creating a dangerous environment for fires to start and spread quickly. The DNR has already responded to over 80 wildfires in the past week alone, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.

To minimize fire risks, the DNR is asking residents to avoid all outdoor burning activities, including yard debris burning and campfires. Residents should also be mindful of discarding hot ashes from fireplaces or woodstoves and ensure they are placed in a metal container to cool completely.

The dry conditions are especially concerning in northern Wisconsin, where some areas haven't seen rain for over a month. Due to the heightened risk, the DNR has suspended annual burn permits in DNR protection areas across the northern two-thirds of the state.

Anyone planning outdoor activities should exercise extreme caution and avoid using equipment that could generate sparks, such as off-road vehicles or lawnmowers.

Here are some key takeaways for staying safe during this high fire danger period:

  • Refrain from all outdoor burning.
  • Report any fires immediately by calling 911.
  • Be cautious when operating equipment outdoors.
  • Secure trailer chains to prevent sparks.
  • Avoid flying drones near wildfires.

Remember, fire danger can change rapidly. Always check local conditions before engaging in any outdoor activities that could potentially spark a fire.
