The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) recognized outstanding contributions to hunter education during National Volunteer Appreciation Week and Month. Volunteer instructors are the backbone of the program, dedicating countless hours to train future generations of safe and ethical hunters. Since 1967, these instructors have certified over one million hunters.
This year's Instructor of the Year is Jesse Schultz from the Waupaca Hunter Safety Program. Praised for his passion and flexibility, Schultz has volunteered for 11 years, ensuring a top-notch learning experience for students.
Jacob Timm, a high school agriculture teacher, takes home the Archery Education Instructor of the Year award. Timm goes beyond teaching archery basics, inspiring his students to become instructors themselves and develop leadership qualities.
The Wisconsin Rapids Area Hunter Safety Group received the Group of the Year award. Led by Ron Winker and the late Kevin Miller, this dedicated group has consistently provided hunter and archery safety education for 20 years, certifying over 2,900 students.
Becoming a volunteer instructor offers a rewarding opportunity to promote safety, prevent hunting accidents, connect with your community, and shape responsible outdoor recreation practices.
