Wisconsin turkey hunt - safety tips for shared woods

Wisconsin turkey hunt - safety tips for shared woods

By Blake Jackson

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is reminding hunters and outdoor enthusiasts to prioritize safety during the 2024 spring turkey season, running from April 17th to May 28th.

With both hunters and non-hunters potentially using public lands, awareness and caution are crucial. Hunters are urged to follow safety protocols, while non-hunters are encouraged to wear bright clothing like blaze orange for increased visibility.

Camouflage, vital for a successful turkey hunt, can also pose a risk. Hunters who blend well with their surroundings may be mistaken for prey by other hunters.

"Positive target identification is paramount," says Lt. Michael Weber of the DNR. "Hunters must be absolutely certain they're shooting a turkey and that it's a safe shot."

Color choices also play a significant role. Wearing red, white, or blue clothing can be dangerous, as glimpses of these colors through brush could be misidentified as a turkey.

Here are some safety tips from the National Wild Turkey Federation:

  • Ensure any red, white, or blue gear (calls, candy wrappers, etc.) is hidden from view.
  • Avoid overly dense camouflage that restricts your vision.
  • Maintain a clear line of sight if using a blind or camouflage netting.

By following these guidelines and practicing safe hunting principles, everyone can enjoy the outdoors during Wisconsin's spring turkey season.
