The Wisconsin Christmas tree sector has shown resilience and growth despite facing recent adversities such as drought and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The state, renowned for its over 850 Christmas tree farms, is ranked fifth in the nation for the number of trees harvested annually, with an expected harvest of over 700,000 evergreens in 2023.
Greg Hann, Media Director of the Wisconsin Christmas Tree Producers Association and owner of Hann's Christmas Farm in Oregon, attributes the industry's stability to adaptive farming practices, including advanced irrigation methods that have helped older trees, typically used for Christmas, withstand drought conditions.
The industry's economic impact is also noteworthy, providing seasonal jobs and supporting the state's economy. Additionally, the use of real Christmas trees offers environmental benefits, as they absorb carbon dioxide, provide wildlife habitats, and are often recycled for various environmental purposes post-holiday.
