Wisconsin Leaders to Earn Top World Dairy Expo Honors
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 03/12/2018

Some of the top honorees for World Dairy Expo's 2018 annual recognition awards will hail from America's Dairyland. The dairy show announced that Pete Kappelman of Two Rivers will be honored as Dairyman of the Year this fall, with Dr. Dan Hornickel and Dr. Chris Keim, Whitewater, sharing the designation of Industry Persons of the Year.

Kappelman is one of the owners of Meadow Brook Dairy Farms, LLC. He served as chairman of the Land O'Lakes board of directors for many years and is also on the Wisconsin Alumni Association board, the USDA's Dairy Promotion and Research board, and is a past president of the Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin. His awards include honorary recognition from the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Wisconsin Jaycees Outstanding Young Farmer and Wisconsin Dairy Farm Family of the Year.

Hornickel and Keim first met while studying at the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Illinois in the 1970s. As the demand for embryo transfer grew, they made the decision to leave their separate practices in 1983 to purchase a 235-acre dairy farm and establish an embryo transfer facility near Whitewater. Sunshine Genetics was established and has become the home to many influential females including two Supreme Champions at World Dairy Expo and four Grand Champions and one Reserve Grand Champion at the Brown Swiss Central National.

Other top individuals to be honored at WDE include Jeanette Sheehan, Rochester, Minnesota, Dairy Woman of the Year; and Alastair Pearson, World Wide Sires China Co. Ltd, Beijing, China, International Person of the Year.

The five recipients will be honored during World Dairy Expo at a special banquet held on October 3.
