The American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) is highlighting the critical issue of worker shortages in the U.S. agricultural sector. The organization sent a letter to the Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Department of Labor (DOL) urging them to take action to address this pressing concern.
The letter outlines two key requests. Firstly, it calls on the USDA to reevaluate the farm labor survey, which determines wage rates for the H-2A visa program for temporary agricultural workers. The AFBF believes the current survey methodology may not accurately reflect market realities.
Secondly, the letter emphasizes the need for improved communication between the DOL and agricultural producers. The AFBF seeks a collaborative effort where farmers and ranchers can share the challenges they face in finding and retaining workers.
Beyond these specific goals, the AFBF emphasizes the importance of ongoing dialogue. They believe that by continuing a productive conversation between policymakers and the agricultural industry, solutions can be identified to improve the situation.
The AFBF acknowledges the current lack of progress on agricultural labor reform. However, they express hope that their outreach will jumpstart renewed discussions and lead to positive changes that benefit both farmers and the agricultural workforce.
