Wisconsin farmers looking to save on crop insurance premiums can apply for a rebate program starting December 2nd, 2024. This initiative, offered by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture (DATCP) in partnership with the USDA's Risk Management Agency (RMA), rewards farmers who plant cover crops.
There's a total of $800,000 available, covering up to 160,000 acres. The program operates on a first-come, first-served basis.
Eligible farmers will receive a $5 per acre rebate on their summer 2025 crop insurance premium for land where they planted cover crops in 2024 followed by an insurable crop in 2025.
Here's what you need to know:
- Farmers who received government funding for cover crops in 2024 are not eligible.
- There's no limit on the number of acres a farmer can apply for.
- You'll need your FSA-578 form and proof of planting (seed receipts and records). DATCP will conduct audits.
- Apply online at covercroprebate.wi.gov starting December 2nd at noon. The deadline is January 31st, 2025, or when funds run out.
This program incentivizes cover crop planting, which can improve soil health and potentially reduce future crop insurance costs. Visit DATCP's website or email [DATCPCC@wisconsin.gov] for more details and application instructions.
