Avian flu update - no Wisconsin cases yet

By Blake Jackson

The recent confirmation of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in dairy cattle herds across eight states by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL) necessitates heightened biosecurity protocols for Wisconsin dairy producers.

While no HPAI (H5N1) detections have been reported in Wisconsin cattle, poultry, or wildlife to date, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) encourages proactive measures to safeguard the state's dairy industry.

Key Points for Wisconsin Dairy Producers:

  • National Outbreak: Over the past 30 days, 65 dairy herds in states including Iowa, Michigan, and Minnesota have confirmed HPAI (H5N1) presence.
  • Financial Assistance: The USDA will soon open applications for the Emergency Assistance for Livestock, Honeybees, and Farm-raised Fish Program (ELAP) to support producers experiencing HPAI-related milk losses. Eligibility requires confirmed positive test results from a USDA NVSL lab.
  • Biosecurity is Paramount: DATCP emphasizes the importance of robust biosecurity practices to minimize the risk of HPAI introduction into Wisconsin herds.
  • Monitor Herd Health: Producers are encouraged to closely monitor their herd health and promptly contact their veterinarian if unusual clinical signs are observed.

DATCP offers a comprehensive suite of resources on its website, including a frequently asked questions document addressing HPAI in dairy cattle.

Additionally, the agency provides information on the Dairy Herd Status Program, which facilitates the safe interstate movement of cows while mitigating HPAI spread.

By implementing these recommendations and maintaining heightened vigilance, Wisconsin dairy producers can play a crucial role in protecting their herds and ensuring the continued health of the state's dairy sector.
