The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) awarded $1.8 million in grants to 38 meat processors through the 2024 Meat Processor Infrastructure Grant Program. This initiative strengthens Wisconsin's meat industry by providing funding for facility upgrades and equipment improvements.
Selected through a competitive review process, these grants aim to enhance processing efficiency, expand capacity, and bolster the long-term viability of Wisconsin's meat sector. 70 applications were received, requesting $3 million in funding. Grant recipients are required to match the awarded amount, demonstrating a significant industry investment.
The 38 grant recipients and their planned projects include:
- Almena Meat Company: Expansion of freezer space for improved product storage.
- Beck's Meats: Upgrades to packaging equipment for increased efficiency.
- Bloomington Meats: Acquisition of new harvesting floor equipment to enhance processing capabilities.
- Butcher Block 66: Investment in grinding and stuffing equipment to streamline production.
- Carl Buddig and Company: Implementation of an automated bagging and scaling system to improve processing speed and accuracy.
These grants are anticipated to contribute positively to both Wisconsin's meat processors and consumers. By fostering increased efficiency and production capacity, the program aims to strengthen the industry's competitive edge, potentially leading to more affordable meat products for Wisconsin residents.
