Bubbles, a five-year-old Border Collie from Montana, is known for her hardworking spirit, gentle nature, and dependable presence on the farm. She performs a wide range of daily tasks, showing how important a trained livestock dog can be for farm operations. Her main responsibility is herding the sheep each evening and guiding them safely from the pasture to their shelter. She also helps manage the poultry flocks and supports the guardian dogs by keeping livestock safe from threats such as coyotes, rattlesnakes, and even grizzly bears.
During the summer, Bubbles assists with irrigation by holding down water dams while her farmer, Elena Hovland-Stuker, places them in the ditches. Her strong responses to commands, quick thinking, and deep understanding of the animals allow her to work with accuracy and calmness. During lambing season, Bubbles becomes even more alert. She wakes Elena if something seems wrong or if a ewe needs help overnight. She greets newborn lambs to bond with them and helps the mothers clean their young, showing her gentle and nurturing nature.
Bubbles also cares for orphaned kittens by cleaning them after feedings and keeping them warm. Since Elena lost her husband three years ago, Bubbles has offered emotional support and has stayed close during difficult days. Her companionship is valued just as much as her farm skills.
Away from the farm, Bubbles serves as the friendly greeter at the greenhouse where Elena works during spring and summer. At the Montana State Fair, she helps teach visitors about the important role of working dogs in agriculture. Her calm behaviour and versatility make her a perfect example of how livestock dogs contribute to education and community engagement.
