The University of Wisconsin Division of Extension is launching a Save A Calf, Save A Cow workshop series tailored for dairy and beef producers, as well as dairy workers, with Spanish-language sessions available.
This program is designed to strengthen participants’ skills in calving preparation, obstetric techniques, and newborn calf care, helping both seasoned and beginner livestock caretakers improve outcomes for cows and calves.
The curriculum covers essential topics such as transition cow nutrition, body condition monitoring, recognizing early signs of labor, and managing challenging deliveries. Participants will gain practical strategies to ensure healthier cows, stronger calves, and more efficient herd management.
The series begins with virtual Zoom classes, where attendees will learn about:
- Neonatal calf care and colostrum management
- Cow nutrition and management before and after calving, with breakout sessions for beef and dairy producers
Following the online sessions, participants can take part in in-person, hands-on workshops. These practical sessions will focus on:
- Identifying the stages of labor and when professional assistance is needed
- Proper use, cleaning, and sanitation of calving equipment
- Worker safety, including cow and calf handling, PPE, biosecurity, and needle use
The cost to participate is $20 per person. Attendance at a Zoom session is required prior to joining the in-person workshops. Participants can select either afternoon or evening options for added convenience.
