Connecticut Farms Drive More Growth and Innovation

Connecticut Farms Drive More Growth and Innovation

By Jamie Martin

Agriculture plays a key role in Connecticut’s economy, health, and communities. With over 5,500 farms covering 372,000 acres, the state’s agricultural sector supplies fresh food, supports local businesses, and preserves open spaces. From dairy and produce to shellfish and maple syrup, Connecticut’s farms provide essential resources.

During National Agriculture Week (March 16-22, 2025), the contributions of farmers are recognized and celebrated. Their dedication to food production, land conservation, and sustainable farming strengthens local economies and improves access to fresh, nutritious food.

Organizations like UConn Extension support farmers by providing education, technical assistance, and science-based solutions in areas such as food safety, risk management, and sustainable farming. These resources help farmers adapt to industry changes while continuing to feed communities.

As part of the celebration, people are encouraged to support local agriculture by visiting farmers’ markets, buying Connecticut-grown products, and acknowledging farmers' hard work. Farming, whether a multi-generational tradition or a new business, is vital to the state’s economy and food supply.

Connecticut farmers play a crucial role in shaping a sustainable and prosperous future. National Agriculture Week is a reminder to appreciate their contributions and support their ongoing efforts.
