The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) has announced the transition of the Retail Food Safety Advisory Committee into the Retail Food Safety Advisory Council (RFSAC). The new council, which includes 20 members from across the state, aims to foster a culture of food safety and ensure open communication between government and industry. Its key role is to offer guidance on food protection, industry education, training, and consistency, while also addressing emerging trends in food safety.
“We believe in strong partnerships and working collaboratively with the industry," said DATCP Secretary Randy Romanski. “DATCP educates while we regulate as we share the industry's goals of providing safe products for consumers. The Retail Food Safety Advisory Council provides the opportunity for renewed and strengthened partnerships between DATCP and the industry."
“The Retail Food Safety Advisory Council is a great example of how industry works with DATCP to achieve common goals and protect public health," said Dr. Jay L. E. Ellingson, Chief Science Officer at Kwik Trip, Inc. and RFSAC council chair. “By working together, we promote food safety practices and have a direct communication and feedback line to government about opportunities and challenges in retail food."
DATCP is currently accepting nominations for the council until February 1, 2025. The council seeks representatives from various sectors, including the Wisconsin Grocers Association, small food establishments (both with and without meal service), convenience stores with significant food services, and meat establishments with retail food operations.
Council members serve four-year terms and meet quarterly. New members will begin their terms in early 2025. Those interested in applying can find nomination forms and further information on the DATCP website. Nominations will be reviewed by a committee, and recommendations for appointments will be made to the DATCP Secretary. Completed forms should be submitted to DATCP’s specified address or email.
