Alltech has published its 2025 Agri-Food Outlook, sharing results from its 14th global feed production survey. The report reveals that worldwide feed output reached 1.396 billion metric tons in 2024, growing 1.2% over the previous year despite climate, disease, and economic setbacks.
The data was collected from 28,235 feed mills across 142 countries. It serves as a key indicator of livestock trends globally and highlights opportunities and challenges in feed production.
The top 10 feed-producing countries in 2024 included China, the U.S., Brazil, India, Mexico, Russia, Spain, Vietnam, Türkiye, and Japan. These countries contributed 65.6% of global feed, with China and the U.S. leading the way.
Poultry feed saw notable increases, with broilers growing by 1.8% and layers by 1.4%. Broiler feed made up 27.6% of total feed tonnage, with growth driven by meat affordability. Layer feed grew mainly in Asia-Pacific and Africa, despite disease pressures like avian flu.
Pig feed production dropped by 0.6% globally. Gains in Europe and Latin America were offset by declines in Asia-Pacific and Africa. Recovery from African swine fever remains uneven, with producers facing high uncertainty.
Dairy feed rose 3.2% to 165.5 million metric tons. Growth was strong in Asia-Pacific, Europe, and Latin America, while North America held steady. Higher milk prices and improved practices supported this growth.
Beef feed also climbed by 1.8% due to global beef demand and limited forage availability, especially in North and Latin America.
“These insights serve as a barometer for the overall livestock industry, highlighting key trends across species, regional challenges and opportunities for growth,” said the report.
