Hands-On Crop Scouting Training Offered in Wisconsin

Hands-On Crop Scouting Training Offered in Wisconsin

By Blake Jackson

The University of Wisconsin Division of Extension is hosting a Foundational Crop Scouting Training Field Day on May 19, 2026, at the Rock County Farm.

This half-day program, scheduled from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., is tailored for new crop scouts, summer agricultural interns, entry-level agronomists, and anyone seeking a refresher on essential field skills.

The training is designed to connect classroom knowledge with real-world experience through hands-on learning in the field. Participants will gain practical skills in growth staging and stand assessments for crops such as corn, soybeans, wheat, and alfalfa.

The program also focuses on identifying common early-season pests and weeds in Wisconsin, helping attendees better understand potential crop threats.

In addition, attendees will practice key sampling techniques, including the use of sweep nets and soil collection methods. The workshop will also cover how to document and report scouting observations effectively to support data-driven farm management decisions.

The $50 registration fee includes lunch, snacks, and a scout’s starter kit featuring crop growth guides and basic field tools. Space is limited, and advance registration is required.

Participants are encouraged to review the Extension’s online webinar series before attending.
