As the weather warms, gardening enthusiasts are invited to join the UW Family Gardening Day on Saturday, May 3, at the University of Wisconsin–Madison campus. This free, family-friendly event will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and promises fun activities for people of all ages.
Hosted at four campus locations, including Allen Centennial Garden, D.C. Smith Instructional Greenhouse, Steenbock Memorial Library, and the Wisconsin Energy Institute (WEI), the event features a variety of gardening-related activities. Visitors can explore displays on pollinators, birds, and plants, make flower art, ask gardening questions, and more. Additionally, there will be free plants and seeds available for attendees to take home while supplies last.
A unique feature of the day is the “passport” program. Visitors can earn stamps by visiting each location and completing various activities. Those who complete their passport will receive a free houseplant, again while supplies last.
“Family Gardening Day welcomes gardeners of all ages to campus. We are excited to engage with folks and encourage their interest in nature,” says Johanna Oosterwyk, manager of the D.C. Smith Greenhouse. “Come enjoy new activities in the garden and learn from our fun student groups while you enjoy all the new spring growth!”
All of the event locations are within a three-block radius on the west side of the UW–Madison campus. Convenient parking is available in several campus lots, including Lot 34, Lot 36, Lot 40, and Lot 41. Visitors can also try the Madison B-Cycle, with a station near Babcock Drive.
Whether you’re an experienced gardener or just getting started, UW Family Gardening Day offers something for everyone. Don’t miss this opportunity to enjoy a day in the garden and learn more about the wonders of nature!
