Join the December "Learn to Hunt Deer" program in Wisconsin

By Blake Jackson

The National Deer Association, in collaboration with the Becoming an Outdoors-Woman program, is hosting a "Learn to Hunt Deer" event this December.

Designed for adults new to hunting, the program offers a mix of virtual instruction, hands-on training, and a mentored hunt.

Program Schedule

  • Virtual Classroom/Q&A: Wednesday, Dec. 4, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., conducted via Zoom. Registered participants will receive the link.
  • Rifle Safety/Sight-In Day: Saturday, Dec. 7, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., at the Delton Sportsmen’s Club in Wisconsin Dells. Attendees should bring a packed lunch.
  • Mentored Hunt: Held Dec. 14-15 in Adams County, Wisconsin. Participants will meet mid-morning on Dec. 14 for a safety review before heading to private hunting grounds. An optional hunt on Dec. 15 is available for those who don’t harvest a deer the previous day.

Program Requirements

Participants must:

  • Attend the Dec. 4 virtual session.
  • Complete the Hunter's Education course and Deer Hunting 101, both provided for free upon registration.
  • Participate in the Dec. 7 Rifle Safety/Sight-In Day.

The $50 registration fee includes access to rifles, ammunition, a blaze orange hat, and a vest. A state hunting license is not required, as this is a Department of Natural Resources-approved event.

This opportunity provides instruction on deer biology, hunting equipment, and safety, culminating in an actual hunt with experienced mentors. Registration closes on Dec. 4.

For more details or to register, contact Peggy Farrell at PFarrell@uwsp.edu. This program is a great way to gain hunting skills and confidence in a supportive environment.
