New school year kicks off with healthier meal choices

New school year kicks off with healthier meal choices

By Jamie Martin

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, in collaboration with the Department of Education, launched the school year with a virtual pep rally to emphasize the importance of nutritious meals in educational success.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona outlined the administration’s steps to enhance school meal programs nationwide.

This year, schools will have more flexibility in meal planning, including the ability to serve protein-rich breakfasts and incorporate locally sourced foods.

Initiatives like the Community Eligibility Provision ensure free meals in high-need areas, supporting about 30 million children daily.

Significant policy updates have been enacted, including reduced sugars and sodium in school meals, with an ongoing commitment to free, healthy meals for all students as a national priority.

These measures are part of a broader strategy to foster educational success through improved nutrition, illustrating the USDA's dedication to building stronger, healthier communities through its school meal programs.
