NMPF Praises House Ag Committee for Dairy Support

NMPF Praises House Ag Committee for Dairy Support

By Jamie Martin

The National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) praised the House Agriculture Committee for including key provisions in its reconciliation proposal that aim to strengthen the agricultural economy and bring stability to farmers, particularly those in the dairy sector.

“We commend Chairman GT Thompson and committee members for advancing important investments that will help support and create opportunities for dairy,” said Gregg Doud, president and CEO of NMPF. “We will work with lawmakers to advance these provisions through Congress, knowing that dairy is well-served by what the House Agriculture Committee is approving.”

Among the highlights of the bill is the extension of the Dairy Margin Coverage (DMC) program through 2031. This long-term extension provides predictability for dairy farmers.

The proposed changes also adjust the DMC’s production history calculations, allowing producers to base it on their highest production year from 2021, 2022, or 2023 an update aimed at better representing current production realities.

The legislation also allocates funding for the USDA to conduct mandatory dairy processing plant cost surveys every two years. These surveys are expected to offer clearer insights into future discussions on make allowances.

Additionally, the bill provides sustained support for trade promotion, conservation initiatives, agricultural research, and animal health programs.

The House Agriculture Committee is expected to pass the bill today, with the proposal becoming part of a broader reconciliation package. That larger package includes tax provisions, such as the permanent extension of Section 199A deduction a move supported by NMPF.

“Whether it’s risk management or tax issues, the stakes are enormous for Congress to get the policy right in this legislation,” Doud said. “House committees have done good work this week to start major elements of this bill on the right track for dairy farmers and the cooperatives they own.”
