A Wisconsin dairy producer is one of eight Farm Bureau members from across the country to graduate from the Partners in Advocacy Leadership program. Derek Orth of Lancaster was part of the PAL training, which entailed four learning modules designed to develop specific advocacy skills while exploring components of leadership and its theories and philosophies.
Orth served as chair of the Wisconsin Farm Bureau's Young Farmer and Agriculturist Committee. He also coaches the Grant County 4-H Dairy Bowl team. Derek and his family gained a little notoriety in 2013 when one of their Jersey dairy cattle was recognized as 'Cow of the Year' at World Dairy Expo.
The AFBF created the PAL curriculum as a high-level, executive training program that prepares participants to represent agriculture in the media, public speaking, congressional testimony and other advocacy arenas. Program graduates gain opportunities to promote awareness about issues important to farmers and consumers.
