Scattered Rains Improve Average Topsoil and Subsoil Moisture Rating Across South Dakota


For the week ending July 9, 2023, there were 5.4 days suitable for fieldwork in South Dakota, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Topsoil moisture supplies rated 8% very short, 32% short, 55% adequate, and 5% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 9% very short, 36% short, 50% adequate, and 5% surplus.

Field Crops Report:

Corn condition rated 2% very poor, 7% poor, 35% fair, 47% good, and 9% excellent. Corn silking was 7%, near 6% for the five-year average.

Soybean condition rated 2% very poor, 8% poor, 37% fair, 46% good, and 7% excellent. Soybeans blooming was 23%, ahead of 17% last year, but near 27% average.

Winter wheat condition rated 17% very poor, 19% poor, 35% fair, 26% good, and 3% excellent. Winter wheat harvested was 9%, equal to last year, and near 6% average.

Spring wheat condition rated 12% very poor, 17% poor, 42% fair, 28% good, and 1% excellent. Spring wheat headed was 95%, ahead of 79% last year and 84% average.

Oats condition rated 3% very poor, 15% poor, 32% fair, 40% good, and 10% excellent. Oats headed was 98%, ahead of 86% last year and 87% average. Harvested was 1%, equal to average.

Sorghum condition rated 3% very poor, 7% poor, 37% fair, 51% good, and 2% excellent. Sorghum headed was 24%, ahead of 10% both last year and average.

Sunflower condition rated 1% very poor, 6% poor, 45% fair, 47% good, and 1% excellent. Sunflowers emerged was 81%.

Pasture and Range Report:

Pasture and range conditions rated 6% very poor, 13% poor, 29% fair, 43% good, and 9% excellent.
