Share your thoughts on Wisconsin’s deer management plans

By Blake Jackson

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is inviting public feedback on proposed changes to the boundaries of the state’s deer management units. This comment period will take place from October 11 to October 20, 2024.

Every few years, the DNR assesses the deer management units, with this year's focus on those located in the Northern Forest Zone, the Metropolitan subunits, and the dividing lines between the Forest and Farmland Zones. However, the Farmland Zone units themselves will not be subject to this review.

This evaluation process aims to consider suggestions gathered during County Deer Advisory Council meetings and legislative sessions. Among the three key proposals under consideration are:

  • Modifying deer management unit boundaries within the Northern Forest Zone to reflect habitat types instead of adhering strictly to county lines.
  • Decreasing the size of the Central Forest Zone, particularly in Wood, Adams, Juneau, and Monroe counties.
  • Adjusting the Metropolitan subunits across the state.

The DNR hopes to use this public input to assess the level of support for these proposed changes. Community members are encouraged to share their opinions, inquiries, or concerns through the comment tool available on the DNR's Deer Management webpage.

Following the input period, the DNR will compile and review all feedback before presenting a final recommendation to the Natural Resources Board for approval, which will align with the 2025 deer hunting season.
