Wisconsin cheese factories manufactured less product during the month of August when compared to the previous year. According to the latest dairy product summary from the USDA, the state produced 286.4 million pounds of cheese during the month. That was 2.6 percent less than last year, and 0.5 percent lower than this past July. Year-to-year output for state dairy products have dropped every month since February.
Nationally, about 1.15 billion pounds of cheese was produced in the United States in August. That was a slight 0.1 percent increase from 2021, but 0.2 percent less compared to the amount manufactured during the previous month.
Wisconsin's production of American cheese decreased as the state produced 85 million pounds, about 4.5 percent less than last year, and 1.6 percent below last month's production. Cheddar output also fell by 3.4 percent compared to 2021 to total 56.9 million pounds, and fell 3.2 percent from the month earlier. Italian cheese production was at 137.8 million pounds, about 0.1 percent below last year, and 1.3 percent lower for the month. And Mozzarella produced in Wisconsin totaled 89.7 million pounds--up 1.0 percent from July 2021, but 1.1 percent less than July 2022.
Dry Whey output in Wisconsin was recorded at 25.6 million pounds, which was down 15.2 percent from last year, and 0.4 percent higher compared to last month.
