Tax season shield - protect yourself from identity theft

Tax season shield - protect yourself from identity theft

By Blake Jackson

Tax season is upon us, and with it comes the unwelcome shadow of tax-related identity theft. This crime can drain your bank account and cause a mountain of paperwork headaches. But fear, not tax warriors! By taking proactive steps, you can protect your precious identity and ensure your hard-earned refund lands in the right hands.

First and foremost, never leave your Social Security number (SSN) vulnerable. Avoid storing it on devices susceptible to malware or data breaches. Consider a PO Box instead of a traditional mailbox to prevent prying eyes from pilfering your personal information. Shredding old documents containing your SSN and other sensitive details is also essential.

Double down on security by applying for federal and state Identity Protection Personal Identification Numbers (IP PINs). These act as extra passwords, adding an essential layer of protection to your tax filings. Remember, the IRS never initiates contact via phone without first sending a letter. So, if you receive an unsolicited call or text claiming to be the IRS, it's likely a scam.

If you suspect you've become a victim of tax-related identity theft, act fast. Contact the Wisconsin Department of Revenue (DOR) immediately, either by phone or email. If you receive a notice from DOR, follow the instructions provided. If you haven't received any official communication but harbor concerns, call DOR directly. You can also report tax-related identity theft to the IRS through their website.

If your identity theft fears are confirmed, take immediate action. Inform your bank(s) and creditor(s) about the situation and place a security freeze on your credit reports with all three major credit bureaus. Remember, vigilance is your best defense against tax-related identity theft. By taking these simple steps and staying informed, you can navigate tax season with confidence, knowing your personal information and refund are safe and sound.

For more information about identity theft and additional consumer protection resources, DATCP’s Consumer Protection Hotline can be contacted at (800) 422-7128 or DATCPHotline@wisconsin.gov.
