Tom Vilsack Launches CSU Course for Small Farms

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack is introducing a new course at Colorado State University (CSU) focused on helping small and mid-size farms survive.

The program, set to launch in fall 2025, will educate students on innovative strategies and government resources to support rural farming communities.

Vilsack, who previously served as a strategic advisor for CSU Spur, aims to equip students with real-world knowledge to assist farmers in developing sustainable business models. “This is an opportunity for young people to learn about entrepreneurship and creating something that doesn’t exist,” he said.

As U.S. Secretary of Agriculture for 12 years, Vilsack witnessed the struggles of small farms. With a shift toward larger commodity-based operations, many small farms have disappeared, impacting rural economies.

The new CSU course will address this challenge by training students to find creative solutions using federal, state, and local support programs.

Students will engage directly with farming communities, applying their knowledge to real-world situations. They will study agricultural policies, financial challenges, and innovative business strategies.

By working with CSU Extension, students will gain practical experience in developing solutions that promote economic sustainability in farming.

Vilsack believes that understanding real-life farming issues is essential. He explained that while large farms generate most agricultural revenue, smaller farms struggle financially. “The first order of business for students is to have a realistic understanding of the way things are out in the real world,” he said.

The program is expected to serve as a model for other land-grant universities. Additionally, Vilsack will take on a role with the World Food Prize Foundation, supporting agricultural innovation.

With his leadership, the CSU initiative could become a significant step toward sustaining small farms and strengthening rural economies.
